Requirements
- Windows or Mac with 16 GB of memory or more
- AnythingLLM Desktop and the model (free, from official sources)
- No terminal needed for the main setup
- Not legal advice, and no setup is made compliant by the kit
A 40-page contract, a deadline, and a rule about cloud chatbots
You will not paste client documents into ChatGPT. The free local AI tools exist, but their setup screens assume you are a developer, and the tutorials start with a terminal window.
Private AI Office walks you through running the free AnythingLLM Desktop app with an open model on your own Windows or Mac computer. You lock down its privacy settings, prove it works with the Wi-Fi off, then put it to work with 65 legal prompts and an ethics kit built around ABA Formal Opinion 512.
It is not legal advice, and it does not make any setup compliant. It gets the software running and the paperwork started.
What changes
One afternoon later, AnythingLLM runs on your laptop with a model sized to your memory, telemetry and web agents off, and the disk encrypted. With the Wi-Fi off, it still answers three questions about a public test contract, and the result sits in your setup log. The 65 prompts are next.
What's inside
Eight guides, from computer check to fix-it table
Check your computer
Windows or Mac, three memory tiers (16, 32 and 64 GB) and a plain answer for 8 GB.
Install
AnythingLLM Desktop, step by step. No terminal in the main setup.
Pick your model
One Apache 2.0 Qwen model already picked for each memory tier.
Privacy switches
Telemetry and web agents off, with the exact screens to check.
Offline proof test
Wi-Fi off, three questions about a public test contract, and a fill-in record for your file.
Disk encryption
BitLocker on Windows or FileVault on Mac, so a lost laptop is not a lost client file.

When it breaks
A fix-it table for the problems people actually hit, and when to call an IT person.
The ethics kit

Keeping data on your machine removes one risk. Wrong answers, fee rules, supervision and laptop theft are still yours to manage.

Choose Pro on GumroadWho this is for, and who it is not for
For you if
- You will not paste client documents into a cloud chatbot, but you want AI help reading them.
- You can install a normal program and drag a file into a window, and that is it.
- Your computer has 16 GB of memory or more, or you plan to buy one.
- You want a written firm AI policy and a client disclosure letter to start from.
Not for you if
- Your computer has 8 GB of memory. The kit says plainly that it is not enough for client work.
- You want a compliance certificate. Whether your setup meets your duties is your call and your state bar's.
- You need case law research or cloud-level reasoning. A local model does neither well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does running AI locally make me compliant with ABA Formal Opinion 512?
No, and no kit can promise that. Keeping data on your machine removes one big risk: a vendor storing or reading client information. Wrong answers, fee rules, supervision and laptop theft are still on you. The checklist walks through the opinion rule by rule so you can decide. It is not legal advice.
Is a local model as good as ChatGPT or Claude?
No. It reads, summarizes, pulls out dates and parties, and drafts routine letters well. It is weaker at long, tricky reasoning, math and current law, and it can be wrong while sounding sure. Check every answer the way you would check a first-year associate's draft.
What computer do I need?
At least 16 GB of memory for the Starter tier. 32 GB on Apple silicon, or a 32 GB Windows PC with an NVIDIA card with 12 GB or more, runs a stronger model, and 64 GB runs the strongest one in the kit. 8 GB is not enough for client work.
Is any software included?
No. You download AnythingLLM Desktop and the model from their official sources, so you always get the current version. Both are free. The kit is the instructions, the settings, the prompts and the templates.
Do I need to be technical?
No terminal is used in the main setup. If you can install a normal program and drag a file into a window, you can follow it. The optional network check and the upgrade notes go further, and the kit says when to bring in an IT person.
Is there a version with a setup review?
Yes, Gumroad lists a Pro edition at $197. You email screenshots of your settings, your offline test record and your machine specs, never client information, and get a written review within 3 business days. Email only, no calls, 5 reviews per month.
One-Time Purchase
One afternoon of setup. No monthly AI bill.
The software is free and stays on your computer. The kit is the instructions, the settings, the prompts and the templates.
